The vigorous umbrella sedge takes 4-6 months to harvest, and only grows in crystal-clear water. It is a traditional material in coastal indigenous’ woven culture.

By separating the skin of the sedge stem from the inner fibers, craftsman Sumi Dongi avoid mildew problem, and made the mats more delicate in nature.

By collaborating with Sumi Dongi, we weave umbrella sedge on structural metal frames to create lightings and stationery with modern forms.

This enables the craft to produce in a small but scaled system.
